Central Mongolia Loop
A short loop west and north of Ulaanbaatar that covers the imperial capital at Kharkhorin, the Erdene Zuu monastery, steppe lakes and the Przewalski's horse reserve at Khustai, with a sand-dune stop at Elsen Tasarkhai that gives a taste of desert without the Gobi's distances. It is the standard answer for travellers with five or six days who want history and grassland rather than desert. Roads are a mix of paved highway and dirt track, and daily stages are short by Mongolian standards. Most versions include a camel ride, a night or two of horse riding, and at least one nomad-family visit.

Day by day
- Day 1
Chinggis Khaan statue and Terelj
About 100 km, 2-3 hours on mixed paved and dirt road. The 40-metre equestrian statue complex, then Terelj National Park for Turtle Rock and the Aryabal meditation temple, with optional horse riding. Tourist ger camp.
- Day 2
Khustai National Park
Around 280 km, 3-4 hours. Late-afternoon game drive to look for reintroduced Takhi (Przewalski's horses), plus the Ungut stone monuments. Tourist ger camp.
- Day 3
Ugii Lake
Roughly 60 km on rough track, 3-4 hours. Boat trip and birdwatching on a shallow steppe lake, with the Khushuu Tsaidam museum and Turkic-era stelae nearby. Tourist ger camp.
- Day 4
Kharkhorin and Erdene Zuu
About 280 km, 5 hours. The site of the 13th-century Mongol capital, its museum, and the walled Erdene Zuu monastery. Tourist ger camp.
- Day 5
Elsen Tasarkhai and a herder family
Around 80 km, 2 hours. Sand dunes at the edge of the Khugnu Khan massif, camel riding, and time with a herding family including hands-on cooking. Tourist ger camp.
- Day 6
Return to Ulaanbaatar
About 300 km, 5 hours on paved road. Breakfast only; the afternoon is usually left for cashmere and souvenir shopping.

Accommodation
Tourist ger camps every night outside the capital, 2-4 people per ger, with 220V power and shared shower and toilet blocks. A 3-4 star Ulaanbaatar hotel on arrival and departure nights, often quoted separately from the tour price.
Vehicle
Air-conditioned private van or 4WD with a driver. A large share of this loop is paved, so a van is adequate and is what most mid-range operators supply; the rough sections are the approaches to Ugii Lake and the dunes.
