Bulgan (Булган аймаг)· Уран Тогоо-Тулга уул

Uran Togoo extinct volcano (Uran Togoo-Tulga Uul Natural Monument)

Uran Togoo is a small, perfectly preserved extinct volcano standing alone above the forest-steppe of Bulgan province, right beside the paved road that carries almost every vehicle heading from Ulaanbaatar to Lake Khuvsgul. A path climbs from the car park to the crater rim in well under an hour, and the rim looks down into an unbroken bowl 500-600 m across and 50-60 m deep, wooded on the inside and often holding a small pool. It is one of four extinct cones in the group, alongside Tulga, Togoo and Jalavch, all formed in the Quaternary and last active some 20,000-25,000 years ago. As a half-day stop it is the single most efficient way to break the drive north, which is exactly how most itineraries use it.

Highlights

  • The 500-600 m wide crater seen from the rim path, with its intact, unbreached wall
  • The short climb to the summit at 1,686 m, doable by most fitness levels
  • Views over Bulgan's forest-steppe and the Selenge basin from the top
  • The wider group of four cones - Uran, Tulga, Togoo and Jalavch - visible across the plain
  • Ovoo cairns on the rim, where Mongolian travellers stop and make an offering
  • Larch and birch woodland on the crater's inner slopes, good for wildflowers in early summer
  • A natural monument protected since 1965, one of Mongolia's oldest protected sites

Season notes

Open all year and accessible whenever the main road is clear, but the walk is most pleasant from May to late September. Early summer brings wildflowers on the inner crater; late September gives yellow larch. Snow and ice on the rim path from November to April make the climb slippery, and the short access track from the main road can be muddy after heavy rain.

From Ulaanbaatar

Paved almost the whole way: Ulaanbaatar - Darkhan - Erdenet - Bulgan, then the Bulgan-Murun road north-west past Khutag-Ondor. The volcano stands on the west side of that main road, with only a short unsealed spur to the base. Routing engines give about 458 km and 7 hours.

By air
None; there is no scheduled air service to Bulgan aimag. It is a road stop.

Where to stay

  • Small ger camps and roadside guesthouses near the base and along the Bulgan-Murun road; prices were not confirmed for 2026
  • Hotels in Bulgan city, about 80 km away
  • Free camping on the steppe near the base, which is common practice

Be aware

It is a stop, not a destination; an hour or two covers it, so do not build a day around it
The rim path is loose underfoot in places and has no railings above the inner slope
Very exposed to wind on the summit, and there is no shade on the climb
Facilities at the base are minimal; carry your own water and take rubbish away
In wet weather the access spur and the informal parking area can bog down a 2WD

Lake Khuvsgul (Khovsgol Nuur)

Khuvsgul · 800 km

Khuvsgul is a deep, cold, exceptionally clear mountain lake in Mongolia's far north, set against the larch and cedar forests that mark the start of the Siberian taiga. It is more than two million years old, reaches 267 m deep, and stores roughly 70 percent of Mongolia's fresh water and about 0.4 percent of the world's. Most visitors base themselves at Khatgal at the southern end and spend their days riding, walking or boating along the shoreline, staying in ger camps built among the trees. Because the road from Ulaanbaatar is paved the whole way and flights land at Murun, it is the easiest place in Mongolia to combine forest, water and reindeer-herding culture in one trip.
